Thrumming uses bits of unspun fleece worked into stitches as they are knit to create a colorwork pattern on the right side and a soft and very warm fleece lining on the inside. Once the technique is mastered, thrumming can be employed in numerous applications. Students will learn how to work a thrum stitch using fleece and how to plan and execute future thrum projects beyond the project worked in class. Students will begin a mitten in class.

Skills covered: use of thrum technique, how to plan thrum usage in future projects.

  • Skill Level and Technique: Knitting
  • Prerequisite: Students should be able to knit, purl, basic increase and decrease techniques.
  • Homework: None
  • Supply List: One Raven Frog thrum kit, or 4 oz. worsted weight wool yarn, with 1-2 oz. unspun wool or wool blend roving. Yarn and roving should NOT be washable. Size 8 needles double point or circular large enough for magic loop, stitch markers.
  • Kit: $35.00 kit fee payable to instructor.
