In this class filled with creativity and technique we will make this fun stuffed toy: a Mini Monster. We will cover techniques such as three-needle attachments, three-needle bind-offs, professional picking up of stitches, knitted-in twists, seaming horizontal seams to horizontal seams, and more. All you need is a little experience in knitting in the round (double points, two circulars, or magic loop—your call!), needles (size 5 plus an extra set of DPNs), and one skein of Noro Silk Garden – or any worsted weight yarn (Note: I like to use the Noro and “harvest” small balls for various parts, i.e., arms one color, legs another, tongue another, etc. But who says you have to do that—If you want an all-green monster, for instance, then get a skein of green worsted yarn and use that!)

  • Student Maximum: 26
  • Skill Level and Technique: Knitting
  • Prerequisite: Basic knitting skills, including increases, decreases and the ability to knit in the round (DPNs, magic loop, or two circular needles)
  • Homework: To take full advantage of the colors in Silk Garden, please “harvest” small balls of yarn from the skein that will be used for “lips, tongue, nose, eyes, arms, and legs”- Look for the “brighter” more colorful sections.
Body: Using the larger “ball” of yarn , CO 36 sts, join, being careful not to twist, and knit for 1 1/2” .
Tongue: On separate needles with yet another contrasting color from your ball stash, one that would be best for your tongue with the color you chose for your lips, CO 6 sts and work 9 rows in garter stitch (knit every row.) cut yarn and put on waste yarn to hold.
Eyes: Make 2 with contrasting color, CO 9 sts. Work in stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for 10 rows. Bind off.
Nose: Another color, CO 12 sts, join working in the round until piece measures 1 1/4" to 1 1/2” put on waste yarn to hold.
  • Supply List: One Skein of Noro Silk Garden (or any other worsted weight yarn—see my note above!), size 5 needles for knitting in the round (note: I like to knit a tighter gauge for stuffed animals so the stuffing doesn’t leak out!—thus a bit smaller needles than normal for worsted yarn!). Your choice: double-pointed needles, 2 circulars, or Magic loop! Plus an additional set of double-pointed needles, and if you have some polyfill hanging around, bring that. I will have some to share, but if you have extra and can share with others, bring it.
  • Kit: $3.00 kit fee payable to instructor. Kit includes printed materials.
